Learn to lower cholesterol at heart-healthy talk

A woman can be fit as a fiddle and still not be heart-healthy.

That’s the message Exercise Physiologist and Registered Dietitian Janet Brill, Ph.D., will bring in her talk, “Heart Health: Exercise Alone is Not Enough,” at Baptist Hospital East from 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 28 in the second-floor auditorium. Registration begins at 6:30 p.m.

Exercise is wonderful, and can make a woman look terrific on the outside. But, inside may be the ticking time bomb of heart disease.

The author of “Cholesterol Down: 10 Simple Steps to Lower Your Cholesterol in Four Weeks Without Prescription Drugs,” said a woman’s risk for heart disease rapidly accelerates after menopause. “After women are diagnosed with heart disease, their prognosis is much worse than a man. Women also do much worse than men after a heart attack,” she added.

A woman’s best bet is prevention, curbing “the most significant risk factor” – cholesterol. To do that, Brill suggests simple changes such as eating an apple and a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast, along with daily exercise.

“The message is simple, but it’s simply not being heard,” said Brill of the heart disease and stroke epidemic, which kills 500,000 more women than men each year. “We need to heed Hippocrates: ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.’"

Cost is $5 per person which includes light refreshments. Deadline for paid registration is Friday, May 23.
