The colorfully decorated Pediatric Unit at Baptist Hospital East gives children all the attention they need from a staff specially trained to deal with children's injuries and ailments. Parents can feel good about entrusting their children to the hospital voted in the Top 100 Hospitals by Solucient in 2005-2007, Most Preferred Hospital for Overall Health Services by the National Research Corporation, and "Best of Louisville" in a 1999 Louisville Magazine reader poll. And, each child can feel good about being in his or her own private room.
The Pediatric Unit is located on the third floor of the 4002 Building adjacent to Baptist East, across the pedway from the Newborn Nursery. Patients are accepted from newborn to 18 years old.
The Pediatric Unit has three monitored beds in a Special Care Unit. The nurses are specially trained in pediatrics, and support services staff members have received specialized training to handle pediatric patients. Pediatric sub-specialists are on staff for consultation, if needed, as well as the hospital-based pediatrician, Gamal Monem, MD, pediatric critical care specialist.
All rooms are private and feature sleeping accommodations for parents, in addition to televisions, VCRs and private baths. Complimentary meal trays are provided to parents and caregivers staying with patients.
The colorfully decorated unit features a flowing "river" down its main hallway, fashioned by sandwiching custom-cut blue flooring between "banks" of sandy-colored flooring. The river -- complete with "fish" -- is part of the unit's biblical theme of "In the beginning...," the opening words from the book of Genesis. Overhead, ceiling tiles embedded with stars complete the effect.
Each room is decorated in a different theme, accented with wallpaper borders featuring fish, dolphins, cats and other playful creatures. Rooms are identified by the animal cutouts beside each door. A sleeper sofa or chair in each room allows family members to stay over with their little ones. Young patients and their siblings can entertain themselves in the nearby play area.
Children may be brought to the pediatric unit following surgery, following a visit to the Trager Pediatric Emergency Care area or for other medical needs.
At Baptist East, we treat kids like kids, and that makes all the difference.
