Millions of Americans, including more than 25 percent of women over age 50, suffer from compression fractures of the spine.

Baptist Hospital East offers two minimally invasive procedures which can help ease the painful and sometimes debilitating condition. Both procedures -- vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty -- repair spinal fractures through injection of a special spinal cement.

One problem of a collapsed vertebrae is that the patient is left shorter. While vertebroplasty does stabilize the spine, kyphoplasty actually restores height as an orthopedic balloon is inflated inside the fractured vertebrae.

Then, the balloon is gently removed, with the resulting cavity filled with special cement.

Treatment for some other spine conditions may require surgery. Many types of disc surgery are performed at Baptist East, including microendoscopic discectomy.
