Cancer Care at Baptist Hospital East

A diagnosis of cancer can release a flood of emotions, concerns and questions. In fact, a person doesn't have to have cancer to be affected by it. Offering support and answering questions for patients and family members can sometimes be just as important as treating the disease.

Cancer care at Baptist Hospital East means meeting those needs as well as staying at the forefront of cancer research and education. Providing total cancer care for patients at Baptist Hospital East takes a team approach from physicians, oncology nurses, nutritional therapists, radiation therapists, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, chaplains and many other highly trained professionals to answer patients' questions and concerns. Having the latest information available not only helps physicians diagnose and treat cancer more effectively, it helps patients and families understand what they are about to face - together.

Leading the Way for Cancer Patients

The cancer care unit was the first of its kind in Kentucky when it opened at Baptist Hospital Highlands in 1977. At Baptist Hospital East, the 26-bed unit features private and semi-private rooms for patients and special areas for family members including a kitchen/family room. A prayer room provides a place for quiet reflection. Families and patients can also find more information about cancer diagnosis and treatment with the help of an easy-to-use, touch-screen computer located on the unit. Patients needing outpatient care, including chemotherapy and blood transfusions, are also treated on the unit.

The Oasis Room provides patients and families a place to relax and raise their spirits. A wide screen television with VCR is just one of the many comforts of home available to families.

The nursing staff has advanced training in meeting the needs of cancer patients. An oncology clinical nurse specialist is available to talk with patients and answer questions about surgery, pain management and treatment as well as working with physicians, nurses, dietitians and other staff to assist patients with the services they need.

Some cancer patients are cared for on other medical/surgical units at Baptist East, especially when surgery is needed during treatment. Many women with cancer of the breast, uterus or ovary are cared for in The WomanCare Plaza, a special medical/surgical unit in the hospital dedicated to meeting women's unique healthcare needs.
