Aging and loss . . . the two go hand-in-hand. As time passes, it's inevitable that we experience many losses. Older people face the stress of many bereavements, often in rapid succession. These can include the loss of independence for health or financial reasons. For some, aging and retirement mean a loss of social prestige and feeling useful. Even a person who has dealt well with change in the past may be overwhelmed with the number of losses he or she is facing in rapid succession.
The Center for Behavioral Health® at Baptist Hospital East recognizes the many problems the elderly face today. The Geropsychiatry Program includes inpatient and partial hospitalization programs that are specially designed to care for emotionally troubled older adults.
Older patients often have chronic health problems which require special medical care. The program's location within a hospital makes it an ideal setting for the treatment of patients with both emotional and medical problems. A physician is available 24 hours a day to handle medical emergencies.
Each patient in the program is under the care of a private psychiatrist who directs the efforts of a team of mental health professionals. Nurses, chaplains, expressive therapists, mental health therapists and recreational therapists work with the psychiatrist to help each patient progress toward recovery.
