Baptist East has some 280 adult volunteers who contribute more than 50,000 hours to the hospital each year.
Volunteers staff the Information Desk; deliver flowers, newspapers, magazines, and electronic greeting cards (eCards) to patients; operate the hospital Gift Shop; and work in nursing units and other hospital departments.
In addition to contributing their time, many Volunteers are members of the Baptist East Auxiliary. Auxiliary members hold various events to raise money for the hospital and proceeds from the hospital's Gift Shop are also donated to the hospital. Funds are used to purchase new medical equipment, help the hospital's Social Services and Pastoral Care departments meet patients' emergency needs, and support projects such as the making of pillows for recovering surgery patients. The Baptist East Auxiliary donated the first $200,000 to the Baptist East Foundation for construction on the new 275,000 square-foot bed tower.
Becoming a Volunteer
To become a Volunteer, you need to call the Volunteer Office and request an application, which will be sent to you.
Once the application is received, you will be called to set up a time for an interview. During the interview, we will discuss your interest in volunteering and what position and schedule would be best for you. At this time, we will also schedule you to attend the hospital safety and customer relations orientation sessions and to have a TB test.
Our Volunteers take pride in their work and are committed to be valuable members of the healthcare team.
Junior Volunteer Program
Baptist East offers the Junior Volunteer program for teens ages 14 through 18 during the summer months only.
Junior volunteers are required to attend a day-long orientation in June and then are assigned to work one day a week for eight weeks. The program ends in mid- to late August.
Junior Volunteers contribute some 5,000 hours every summer by helping out in nursing units, Central Processing, Materials Management, Physical Therapy, the Child Development Center and many other areas of the hospital. The program provides teens with the experience of working in a hospital, as well as a good reference for their first jobs.
Baptist East's Junior Volunteer program is the state's largest.
Spiritual Contribution
The members of the Auxiliary, in their help to the ill and the giving of their time, create an atmosphere of warmth and spirituality throughout Baptist East. The gracious giving and Christian caring further uphold the long-standing tradition of volunteering at the hospital.
