The Radiology Department at Baptist Hospital East is a large department comprised of more than 160 employees.
Approximately 90 to 100 of these employees are radiologic technologists. Currently, 13 radiologists staff the department 16 hours per day, seven days per week. There are more than 230,000 radiology examinations performed annually.
The department is full-service offering Diagnostic Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, Mammography, Vascular, MRI and CT.
In 2004, the department was instrumental in imaging a 2,000 year-old mummy from the Louisville Science Center. The mummy is now back on display; images provided by Baptist East are part of the exhibit and are showcased in a video.
Diagnostic Radiology has nine X-ray rooms, five of which are fluoroscopic rooms. There are two rooms located in the Emergency Department (ED) and a room located in the Pre-Admission Testing (PAT) area. The department operates on a filmless basis using a PACS, or Picture Archiving and Communication System.
Dedicated staff work in the ED, PAT and Surgery, performing 108,000 diagnostic exams each year. There are two vascular suites with dedicated technologists serving those areas.
The areas of CT, MRI, Mammography, Ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine have technologists dedicated to those specific sections. These technologists work only in the area of their specialty.
Whenever openings occur in these areas, we try to allow the diagnostic technologists the opportunity to transfer into a specialty area.
