Baptist Hospital East offers a wide range of clinical challenges to both newly graduated and experienced physical therapists. The hospital's Physical Therapy department is comprised of four separate and highly specialized patient care areas.
Therapists working at Baptist East have the opportunity to gain experience in all four clinical sites or to remain in one of the departments to develop an area of expertise.
Acute Care -- Acute physical therapy services are provided to patients from many of Baptist East's patient care units, such as orthopedics, neurological/neurosurgical, oncology, cardio-pulmonary, vascular, critical care and medical/surgical.
Physical therapy staff work closely in an interdisciplinary manner with such departments as Nursing, Respiratory Care, Pharmacy, Patient Management Services, Speech and Occupational Therapy.
Rehabilitation program -- Physical therapists play an integral part in Baptist East's 29-bed Rehabilitation program. This program offers a multidisciplinary team approach to helping patients with head injuries, multiple trauma, strokes and other disabling conditions regain the skills needed for independent living.
As part of the Rehabilitation program, physical therapists are also involved with the Amputee Clinic, Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, Post-Polio Clinic, and a regional Muscular Dystrophy Clinic, which serves 30 counties throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
Outpatient clinic -- The Outpatient Physical Therapy Clinic specializes in the treatment of orthopedic disorders. These services are designed to provide each patient with a comprehensive evaluation, followed by an individual treatment program based on each patient's needs.
Provided are such services as assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal pathologies, manual therapy techniques and gait analysis.
In addition, specially-trained therapists work in Baptist East's Lymphedema Clinic and Women's Health Program.
BESST -- Baptist East Spine and Sport Therapy Clinic (BESST) provides on-site physical therapy services at the Baptist East/Milestone Wellness Center, 750 Cypress Station Drive near the Mall St. Matthews. (Learn more at www.baptistmilestone.com.)
Therapists have access to the full array of exercise and fitness equipment as well as providing aquatic therapy in the large therapeutic pool within the 72,000-square-foot facility.
This clinic complements the Outpatient department to further the hospital's goal of health, fitness, and injury prevention and treatment to the community.
Baptist East's commitment to excellence in physical therapy is supported by continuing in-service education, and an environment which fosters the free exchange of ideas and information. The Physical Therapy staff promotes patient education and home program instruction as well as participates in many community educational programs.
The department also offers clinical rotations to students in physical therapy and physical therapy assistant programs through affiliations with several area educational institutions.
