Baptist Hospital East offers a range of clinical challenges to both newly graduated and experienced occupational therapists.
Therapists working at Baptist East have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of clinical sites.
Rehabilitation program -- Occupational therapists play an integral part in Baptist East’s 29-bed Rehabilitation Unit program. This program offers a multidisciplinary team approach to helping patients with head injuries, multiple trauma, strokes and other disabling conditions to regain the skills needed for independent living.
As part of the Rehabilitation program, occupational therapists are also involved with the Multiple Sclerosis clinic, Post-Polio Clinic and a regional Muscular Dystrophy Clinic, which serves 30 counties throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
Acute Care -- Acute occupational therapy services are provided to patients from many of Baptist East’s patient care units such as Orthopedics, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Oncology, Vascular, Critical Care and Medical/Surgical.
Occupational therapists work closely in an interdisciplinary manner with such departments as Nursing, Respiratory Care, Food and Nutrition, Pharmacy, Patient Management Services, Speech and Physical Therapy.
Outpatient Services -- Outpatient occupational therapy services are provided to a wide variety of patients with disorders such as stroke, orthopedic conditions, head injuries, multiple trauma, developmental disabilities and other disabling conditions.
These services are designed to provide each patient with a comprehensive evaluation, followed by an individual treatment program based on each patient’s needs. Occupational therapists bring their expertise to the fabrication and fitting of hand splints as well as hand rehabilitation.
In addition, specially trained occupational therapists work in Baptist East’s Lymphedema Clinic for those patients requiring manual lymph drainage, bandaging and garment fitting.
Baptist East's commitment to excellence in occupational therapy is supported by continuing in-service education, and an environment which fosters the free exchange of ideas and information. The Occupational Therapy staff promotes patient education and home program instruction as well as participates in many community educational programs. The department also offers clinical rotations to students in occupational therapy and occupational therapy assistant programs through affiliations with several area educational institutions.
