Robotic procedures available at Baptist Health Louisville

The most up-to-date method of minimally invasive surgery uses computer-enhanced robotic technology to overcome some of the challenges associated with standard laparoscopic procedures. Used in tens of thousands of minimally invasive procedures worldwide, the da Vinci Surgical System expands the capabilities of Baptist Health Louisville surgeons by allowing them even more exacting precision, control and maneuverability.

During a da Vinci procedure, the surgeon makes several dime-sized or smaller incisions and inserts miniature, specially designed instruments through ports into the surgical site. Seated at an ergonomically-designed console a few feet from the operating table, the surgeon then remotely manipulates the instruments using a control system that directly translates into precise movements and filters out any hand tremor. A video monitor provides a magnified, three-dimensional view of the surgical area that provides greater visual detail than traditional surgery.

Other members of the surgical team stand by the operating table to assist, closely monitoring the patient and the robot-controlled instruments. The system cannot be programmed or make decisions on its own – every movement requires direct input from the surgeon.

Baptist Health Louisville physicians specialize in a full spectrum of minimally invasive surgical techniques. Various da Vinci robotic procedures are offered at Baptist Health Louisville:
