Minimally invasive treatment for pituitary tumors
Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal procedure
A simpler, less painful alternative to the removal of pituitary tumors is available at Baptist Health Louisville. The Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal procedure is a new and advanced minimally invasive approach to pituitary gland surgery that offers patients shorter recovery time and less discomfort, with equal or better surgical results.
During the laparoscopic procedure, the surgeon places an endoscope into the nostril, then uses tiny surgical instruments to perform the surgery. Because the endoscope projects a lighted, magnified view of the sinus and pituitary area onto a video monitor, the surgeon has a much better view of the tumor and surrounding tissue.
Unlike traditional surgery, this technique does not require the surgeon to make an incision or to break the nose, and patients usually return home the next day, compared with four to five days.
Advantages to the minimally invasive Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal procedure include:
- Faster operating time
- Less trauma to normal tissue
- Better precision and control for the surgeon
- Less pain and discomfort after surgery
- Shorter hospital stay and recovery
