Surgeons perform laparoscopic surgery through small incisions that may require only a stitch or two to close. Tubes, or "ports," inserted through these incisions create passageways for specially-designed video cameras that transmit magnified images of the surgical site to a video monitor. The surgeon uses miniature surgical tools to perform the procedure.
