Central line infection

Central Line Associated - Blood Stream Infections (CLA-BSIs) are blood infections that are not associated with any other cause which develop due to bacteria being introduced into the blood stream from the central line. An estimated 200,000 CLA-BSIs occur each year in the United States. Primary blood stream infections are usually serious infections that typically increase hospital length of stay, cost, and risk of death. The population at most risk and followed for this indicator is the patient in the adult Intensive Care Units (ICU).

The definition and benchmark for this indicator comes from the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN.) The benchmark is 3.2 infections per 1,000 line days.

The graph at this link illustrates the measure of that benchmark at our hospitals.

Baptist Healthcare System strives to attain the lowest score possible on this measure.
