Three babysitting classes offered in June and July

Youngsters age 12 and older who are looking to learn and earn this summer can explore babysitting by taking one of three classes offered by Baptist Hospital East.

The classes will be from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, June 17; Friday, July 8 and Friday, July 22 in the second-floor Education Center of the hospital, 4000 Kresge Way.

Chris Summerfield, RN, women’s health community educator at Baptist East, will teach students about childcare basics, first aid and what to do if the child is choking. Stacy Mattingly, director of the hospital’s Center for Child Development, will instruct the new sitters in how to interact with children and the characteristics of each age group. Mattingly will teach the students from 9:30 a.m.-noon in the Child Development Center on the hospital’s campus.

The course is designed to help future sitters gain the confidence needed to do the job well and also feel good about what they’re doing.

Cost of the class is $20 per person, and includes lunch, supplies and materials. Participants may wish to bring money to purchase soft drinks and snacks. Class size is limited.

Advance registration is required and may be made by calling the Baptist Hospital East Information Center at (502) 897-8131.

For easy access to the Education Center, parents dropping off students may park in the hospital garage and take the second floor pedway to the hospital. Signs will be posted for the classroom location.
