Magellan System speeds healing after surgery

A new fully automated platelet separation system that allows surgeons to use a patient’s own blood during surgery is speeding the healing process.

Baptist Hospital East was the first in the state to use the system.

The Medtronic MagellanTM Autologous Platelet Separator requires only a small sample of blood (30-60 cc) and processes it in a closed, germ-free environment. Using a patient’s own blood during surgery eliminates concerns over negative reactions to donated blood, contamination or infection.

The Magellan System separates blood into three basic components: platelet poor plasma, platelet rich plasma and red blood cells. Mixing platelet poor plasma and platelet rich plasma results in a gel-like substance known as concentrated platelet rich plasma. When sprayed into wounds or incisions, healing begins instantly.

Platelets are full of growth hormones that enhance the healing process. A wound only a couple of days old looks like it has been healing four- to six-weeks.

Studies with cardiac surgery patients revealed wounds healed faster, and patients experienced less pain, versus using a traditional pain pump. Additionally, the system replaces more expensive equipment and is more cost-effective.

Fewer pain pumps (which provide medication to patients to reduce pain), and fewer chest drains are being used because of the automated platelet separation system.  Patient satisfaction has increased.

Concentrated blood platelets can also be used in general surgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology and vascular surgery as well as with patients undergoing plastic surgery – allowing the blood’s own healing properties to speed recovery.
