Cancer Care Center Wins Consumer First Award

MediaStar logoThe Baptist Hospital East Cancer Care Center was honored as the Consumer First Award winner at the 2009 MediStar Awards.

The award is presented annually to “an individual, organization or entity that has demonstrated the most ‘consumer friendly’ program(s) or facility within a healthcare environment.’”

The Cancer Care Center was recognized for such patient-friendly efforts as massage and music therapy, an exercise room for long-term patients, a prayer book in the gathering area for families and helping to stage an early graduation ceremony for twin daughters of a breast cancer patient who died six days later.

Baptist East’s Park Tower also earned accolades as a finalist for the Facility Design Award, given for the “most innovative” project. The eight-story tower, which opened in August 2008, houses outpatient surgery and 144 over-sized all-private rooms. Suggestions from hospital staff, patients and physicians were incorporated into the building’s design, for greater comfort and convenience. Special features include two rooms on each floor for larger patients, respite rooms for staff and a pair of gardens.

The awards, handed out March 12 at the Kentucky Center for the Arts, are sponsored by Medical News, a business healthcare publication that covers Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
