Sharing Our Stories breast cancer support group - Feb. 6

Mon, Feb 6, 2012 5 p.m.

Sharing Our Stories (SOS), a support group for women diagnosed with breast cancer within the last 18 months, will launch Monday, Feb. 6.

Participants in the eight-week group will develop coping strategies to take them from surviving cancer, along the path to thriving.

To assist with side effects of breast cancer, participants will learn practical tips to deal with lymphedema and how to artfully use makeup to deal with appearance-related issues.  A volunteer from the American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better program will help women address those side effects of treatment.

Proper use of the Internet and social media for information and support will also be explored. Art therapy will be introduced to participants, along with a chance to talk with a sex therapist about changes in body image due to breast cancer treatment.

Group facilitators are community cancer resource nurse Sr. Barbara Nicholas, RN, and Tina Toole-Harper, RN, nurse navigator for Baptist Hospital East.  Both specialize in caring for the physical, social and emotional needs of those with cancer.

Beginning Feb. 6, SOS will meet for eight sessions on Mondays from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Baptist East Cancer Resource Center, 4007 Kresge Way, across the street from the hospital.  Parking is free.  Participation is limited to 12 members.  After the first two sessions (Feb. 6 and Feb. 13), the group will be closed to new members. The group will wind up March 26.
