DBS support group to learn about procedure March 27

Sat, Mar 27, 2010 11 a.m.

General information about the deep brain stimulator (DBS) procedure will be given at the March 27 meeting of the DBS support group the Baptist East/Milestone Wellness Center, 750 Cypress Station Drive. The meeting will be from 11 a.m.-noon.

Colleen Knoop, a nurse practitioner for University of Louisville Movement Disorder Clinic, will  discuss general information about the DBS procedure with a question and answer session.

DBS is a treatment option for Parkinson’s disease symptoms that are not treated by medications, including shaking, stiffness, and slowness. The procedure involves implanting an electromagnetic “pacemaker” on one or both sides of the brain. This treatment is often utilized by patients who have exhausted other means of treatment. DBS is a treatment option offered by only a handful of hospitals in the country, including Baptist East.

The support group is for those who have received DBS, and those who are interested in the procedure.

Lunch is provided.

To register, call the Baptist Hospital East Information Center at (502) 897-8131.
